Why Is Chocolate Popular At Easter?

For many of us the best part of Easter is chocolate! So why is chocolate so popular at this time of year?It was the Pagans who first incorporated eggs into their springtime celebrations, to symbolise new life. Christians followed, using hollow eggs to represent Christ’s tomb and it was the Victorians who had the idea to include chocolates inside the eggs exchanged as gifts. Eggs made entirely from chocolate soon followed and thank goodness they did! As Easter is a celebration of the resurrection, and chocolate is a symbol of happiness and joy, chocolate has become a much-loved way to enjoy the festivity. Here's more evidence of the popularity of Easter eggs and Easter chocolate:

• The world's largest Easter egg was made in Italy in 2011. It was 10.39 meters tall, weighed 7,200 kilograms and had a circumference of 19.6 meters at its widest point.
• 90 million chocolate bunnies are sold each year.
• 80 million Easter eggs are sold each year in the UK alone!

We always loved watching children’s eyes light up when they stepped into our Birmingham chocolate store at Easter. They were especially excited by the rows of chocolate eggs tied with brightly coloured ribbon and our luxury chocolate bunnies and mini egg assortments. Since closing our Birmingham store in 2021, we've continued the tradition of making hollow Easter eggs, filled with luxury chocolates and mini eggs. It brings back such happy memories of our childhood, when all Easter eggs were made in this way. Opening a chocolate egg to discover the chocolate treats inside is a pleasure which can never be outgrown!
